Martin's dive into this side of Chicago and it's unseen side and his unique writing style telling the story of Chicago's cast offs was so enjoyable I'm going to read it again. A searing snapshot of hidden Chicago, a horrific secret history recalled in a way that conjures up Walter Benjamin's PASSAGES crossed with Balzac at his most outraged. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leslie Willis -- An essential read in the aftermath of the 20th century : I've never read anything quite like Mother Chicago. It has a feel to it that is like being somewhere you are not allowed to be and seeing things you were not supposed to see. Very much like the trespassing the author did in his youth and what led to the revelatory nature of this book. It captures the spookiness of invading old haunted places but not in some superficial scary recall. Billheimer takes us deep into the hidden horrors of the city with "big shoulders" where what happened to the proletarians unfit to work was worse than what happened to the poor gainfully employed.
