Beyond Collaboration Overload: How to Work Smarter, Get Ahead, and Restore Your Well-Being Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from V. Disalvo -- Keen insights for everyone working in an "always on" environment : This book is full of gems related to accelerating connection, finding and driving purpose, and most importantly finding that balance leading to overall physical and mental wellness. The examples from his interviews, for me, were the most powerful parts of the book. I find most books these days just recycle age-old platitudes and have little to offer in "new" data, tips, and recipes for success. I'm not sure if this book will change my life, but it will certainly change the way in which I work in it. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Erik Samdahl -- Help yourself, help your employees : guide to reduce stress and improve productivity, but by focused on how you work and connect with others. Recommended. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from J.M. Ryan -- A Useful Field Guide to Effective Collaboration : Popular business books often over-promise. Too often they offer glib solutions. Fail to go deep enough and fail to work thru messy real world dilemmas. The strengths of Rob Cross’s recent book on “essential collaboration”, a core leadership skill, far outweigh its weaknesses. In brief, Cross draws on rich applied research and consulting experience as well best current thinking. He offers useful diagnostic checklists and reflection questions which he calls a “coaching break”. They address everything from nitty gritty particulars like efficient meetings and efficient emails, to building trust, strategic calendaring, energizing leadership behaviors vs. de-energizing behaviors, building and leveraging networks, assessing dysfunctional collaboration, and more. Also, he offers a wide array of real world mini-examples. The book is written for popular audience so the examples lack ethnographic depth vs. rich case studies. I view this as a trade off that comes with that terrain. Yes, it is relevant book, a practical book, but not a perfect book. On the other side of the coin (weaknesses), the book lacks a clear and compelling framework. He offers a framework, “the infinite loop”, for buying back time and using your time more strategically but that framework is more patchwork than good theory. Remember Kurt Lewin’s counsel, “there is nothing more practical than a good theory”. On this front, see Morton Hansen’s 2009 book which address more macro issues in a robust way. Here Cross takes a more micro and a coaching focus. Additionally, the last chapter of the book addressing “well being and health” is well intended but thin, trendy, not linked to best current thinking. All in all, this book is a good applied research contribution, well worth a close read, despite my reservations. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tammy Pryor -- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2021 : ( What a FANTASTIC book. So incredibly practical with so many easy to apply suggestions on how I can fight the collaborative overload that has become so overwhelming in today’s world. Strongly recommend to EVERYONE. )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tom G. -- Practical and actionable : ). This book avoids all those flaws. I found the research totally credible, the problem Cross identifies (in collaborative overload) very believable and resonant, and the advise just super practical and specific. Getting to the point where I’m making the insights part of my daily work won’t be easy—what Cross describes is challenging—but it’s all there for me or anyone else who wants to claw back time they're wasting and put it to a use that will help not only the company, but themselves. If you manage people or lead teams this book is worth picking up. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Not your grandparents book on collaboration (despite some reassuring parallels) : The sheer quantity of time spent in collaborative activities and the rate at which demands pile up points to an area ripe for fresh perspectives on improving personal productivity and well being. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Peter Gray -- Terrific book! : An incredibly practical guide to rescuing our lives from the overwhelming pace of collaboration that is common in most organizations today. Years of research, terrific recommendations, cannot recommend it highly enough! ( Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Miss C M Hannis -- Practical, grounded & wise : I got sent a pdf of this book by the publisher, read it and immediately bought the hardback (which I don't think I've ever done before). I get sent a lot of dross but this is the opposite in that it packs new ideas and concepts that ring totally true into every chapter. With very practical takeaways for individuals & organisations. You see the real research running through it rather than just 'some stuff that worked for the author'. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 5, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from @ggiacomelli -- Mandatory reading for innovators : Anybody interested in understanding key drivers of the current business and social innovation dynamics should read this. It is short, accessible, but also insightful. And importantly, it presents a balanced view of the risks and the opportunities - both of which are huge. ( Reviewed in Germany on September 16, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Fred Wilson -- Very interesting, well written, clear insight to apply yourself : Great read. ( Reviewed in the Netherlands on November 22, 2021 )
